Domaine René Engel was amongst the elite of Vosne-Romanée before the sudden death in 2005 of owner and winemaker Philippe Engel and subsequent sale to Ch Latour owner Francois Pinault. This 1998 Grands Echezeaux is a rare chance to taste its old-vine Pinot Noir from a Grand Cru vineyard adjoining Romanée-Saint-Vivant. Expect a mature garnet colour, aromas of forest floor, dried cherry and game, and a silky, fully resolved palate. Now fully mature and best drunk without further delay, it suits roast partridge, duck or mushroom dishes.
