The second wine of Château Margaux, Pavillon Rouge leans heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon, giving it more backbone than most Margaux second wines. In 2016 expect morello cherry, cassis and black raspberry fruit alongside menthol, cocoa and a herbal, garrigue-like lift. The tannins are fine-grained and silky, wrapped around a taut, mineral-tinged structure that keeps the wine fresh rather than heavy. Already drinking well, it has the balance to develop further towards 2040. A relatively affordable way to taste the Margaux house style at its best.
