The Times has given an early verdict on The Shepherd Mayfair, the new boutique hotel in Shepherd Market, calling it an exciting arrival in a lively, less-known corner of Mayfair.

The paper's reviewer singled out the hotel's playful interiors and a standout all-day restaurant, and found the surrounding quarter livelier than visitors might expect from such a smart postcode.

The Shepherd opened in early October with 82 rooms and suites over six floors at 2 Stanhope Row. Bain Capital and Orka Investments are behind it, and its interiors are by the design studio Shepherd&.

Food and drink are led by Fayre, a 62-cover restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and The Lounge, an all-day café and bar with a terrace. A late-night cocktail bar, Teddy's, is due to open in the basement in November.

Its name honours Edward Shepherd, the 18th-century architect and developer who laid out the market streets around it.
